The first level of Rusty Lake Roots, "The Tree," serves as the genesis of this story. In the spring of 1860, James' uncle mysteriously passes away, leaving him as the sole inheritor of all his possessions—a house and a very peculiar seed. He plants the seed in the ground.

Take the items: bones and a sapling.

Give the bones to the dog; it will dig a hole. Plant the sapling in it.

There's a kettle nearby; pick it up and hang it over the well to draw water.

Water the sapling!
